Kilroy Was Here
Thu May 22, 2008 at 05:43:33 PM PDT
This story, from McClatchy's blog, Nukes & Spooks put a smile on my face. It seems we're to the public mocking stage of the Bush administration. I'm hoping the stockades and rotten tomatoes come next!
Another Democratic AG Being Taken Down?
Sat Apr 19, 2008 at 11:13:45 PM PDT
Anthony Gutierrez, general services director for Democratic Ohio Attorney General, Marc Dann, has been accused of sexually harassing two 26 year-old women, who are part of his staff. The harassment allegedly happened at a condo Dann shared (he moved out in December) with Gutierrez and communications director, Leo Jennings.
I heard this reported in the most lurid terms on a Dayton, OH, television station tonight and, I must say, I felt the hair on the back of my neck prickle. Dann was instrumental in the investigation into Coingate and is currently working to solve our state's problems with foreclosures, predatory lenders and failing charter schools.
Did We Miss OBL Again?
Mon Oct 29, 2007 at 04:49:41 PM PDT
Last week, Col. David Hunt, a Fox News contributor, wrote a piece for them entitled America Could Have Killed Usama bin Laden — But Didn't. Astonishingly, while he was talking about the area around Tora Bora, he didn't mean the incident with which we are all familiar from 2001. He is talking about August 2007!
FISA: Steny Hoyer Stiff-Armed by Prog. Caucus
Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 09:07:42 AM PDT
The 72 members of the House Progressive Caucus has told Steny Hoyer that, unless eight specific principles were included in a new FISA bill, they would fight it.
See Dems Postpone Rollout Of Controversial Wiretapping Bill article at Huffington Post and below for their statement and the principles outlined by the Progressive Caucus.
The Senate Gets Raucous and (new topic) Gates Responds
Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 09:23:27 PM PDT
Breaking News:
Gates claims he never saw Clinton's reply to Edelman and seems to disagree with what Edelman said. One of the commenters at TPM has found out Edelman's term expired in January of this year. What the hell is he doing still there, much less replying to a U.S. Senator?
Gates' reply:
"I have long been a staunch advocate of Congressional oversight, first at the CIA and now at the Defense Department. I have said on several occasions in recent months that I believe that congressional debate on Iraq has been constructive and appropriate. I had not seen Senator Clinton’s reply to Ambassador Edelman’s letter until today. I am looking into the issues she raised and will respond to them early next week."

Every one of the buildings at Walter Reed is the same way, or worse
Sat Mar 17, 2007 at 11:49:48 PM PDT
So says Mark Cordell, a contractor sent in to coordinate repairs at Walter Reed.
He reports that, after the problems in Building 18 were exposed, the soldiers were just moved to a building that had the same problems.
Cordell was so frustrated that, last week, he quit and went to WUSA, Channel 9 in the D.C. area, with 81 pictures he had taken throughout the facility.
Rethinking the Jefferson Raid
Wed May 24, 2006 at 02:37:32 PM PDT
As did many of us around here, I agreed with the sentiment that, "Oh, poor Congress! How do they like getting a taste of the privacy violation medicine," when William Jefferson's office was raided.
Randi Rhodes has made me re-think this. Hear me out on the flip.
Pictures From Today's Paul Hackett Rally!
Sat Jul 30, 2005 at 12:26:54 PM PDT
I volunteered to canvass for the Paul Hackett campaign in Cincinnati today. Although I live just north of there and can't vote in the election, it would make me so happy to have a Democrat in national office from this area. Prior to canvassing, our crowd of about 200(?) was given a bit of a pep rally from Paul Hackett, John Glenn, Max Clelland, Ted Strickland and Michael Coleman.
Impressions and pictures from the rally after the bump:
Bush Lies About AIDS aid
Thu Jun 30, 2005 at 10:41:03 PM PDT
Has this administration ever done any good thing it promised or claimed? Still not come up with anything? Me either. And here's another example of the Bushies trying to take credit for something they've not done.
Botswana's Gains Against AIDS Put U.S. Claims to Test
As global leaders gathered in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum in January, officials from President Bush's $15 billion anti-AIDS program issued a news release citing their accomplishments. Nowhere were the numbers more impressive than in Botswana, where 32,839 AIDS patients were receiving life-extending treatment with the help of the U.S. government, they said.
But thousands of miles away in Botswana, the Bush administration's claim provoked frustration and anger among public and private partners that had built Africa's most far-reaching AIDS treatment program, recalled those involved. Although the Bush program had promised millions of dollars of support, no money had yet arrived, they said.

The Guardian credits bloggers with keeping the story of the Downing Street Memo alive.
With the release of the second memo, blogs can take some credit in raising the profile of the story in the US media.

Amnesty Intl Calls Out Bush and Other Items of Interest
Fri Jun 03, 2005 at 02:21:04 PM PDT
I love it when the good guys fight back.
From Yahoo (so go rate it up!):
"The administration's response has been that our report is absurd, that our allegations have no basis, and our answer is very simple: if that is so, open up these detention centers, allow us and others to visit them," Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Zubaida Khan told a news conference.
"Transparency is the best antidote to misinformation and incorrect facts," said Khan, who is here to meet with Japanese officials.
They gave just the right response. If you've nothing to hide, then show us.
Other items of interest (to me, anyway):
U.S. Firms Being Protected in Bolton Documents?
Tue May 31, 2005 at 10:16:12 PM PDT
The
International Herald Tribune has posted an article citing the dreaded anonymous White House source as saying that the American people being protected in the 'John Bolton' documents are actually American companies. I believe I'm catching a bit of eau de Halliburton in the air once again.
It had previously been reported only that the White House was refusing to hand over the names of 19 American persons mentioned in 10 intelligence reports by the National Security Agency.
The fact that the documents also included the names of American companies, and that the subject had to do with possible violations of American export restrictions, provides a new clue as to why the White House might be rebuffing the congressional requests.
ACTION ALERT: Nuclear Option Notice
Thu May 12, 2005 at 04:35:20 PM PDT
People for the American Way is setting up a truly rapid response. As soon as the Senate Republicans try the Nuclear Option, PAW will text message you and supply a link to the Senate switchboard. So, with a couple of clicks, you will be calling the switchboard and lighting up their lines. They say this is the first time this has been tried on such a massive scale. If enough people join up, the response could be quite impressive.

SS - Their Plan to Rule for the Next 50 Years
Tue Mar 22, 2005 at 05:57:18 PM PDT
Thom Hartmann lays out the theory that the real purpose for this administration pushing Social Security reform is to attract the young demographic, the only age group Bush did not win in this last election, so the Republicans can rule for the next 50 years. And, it seems it's working. Those under 30 are the only age group that view private accounts favorably.
In other words, we may win the fight to retain Social Security, but we're not fighting for the same prize as the Republicans.
Even if we win, we lose. The Republicans will just claim that they tried to give a better retirement to today's young people, but those evil Democrats wouldn't let them.
Maybe this is why Bush keeps pushing Social Security in the face of widespread disapproval.
A snippet from the article follows the break.
Hey, Baby, What's Your Sign? (w/Poll)
Fri Mar 18, 2005 at 10:56:03 PM PDT
I'm not really into astrology, although I do think there is something to there being personality likenesses among those of a particular sign. Besides, it's Friday night. I doubt there was a single Friday night in the mid- to late- 70s that I didn't have to answer this question. It was either this question or 'Hey, wanna go burn one?' I used to swear that was the 70s version of 'wanna come up and see my etchings?'
I'll get it started. I'm a Pisces, and I'm as true a Pisces as you will find.
Please Explain Clawback to this Economics Idiot
Sun Feb 27, 2005 at 11:54:29 AM PDT
In today's Middletown (OH) Journal, my LTE was upgraded to their My View column, which meant I didn't have the size restrictions of a LTE and, in the paper version, my picture was included (for good or bad). Middletown is in the middle of the reddest part of this red state, so I think it's important to get out whatever information one can to the people of the area.
I have so far received two responses to it, one positive and one refuting it.
In order to respond to the one challenging my opinion, I need to understand, beyond what Paul Krugman says, the concept of clawback.
Sean Hannity, Matchmaker - Hilarious
Thu Feb 24, 2005 at 08:02:05 PM PDT
I couldn't make this up. Sean Hannity has started a
dating section on his website. He's actually encouraging these people to get together and, if all goes well, breed. This site will provide me with hours of entertainment.
I originally found this story on AmericaBlog who then pointed to Center for American Progress
Here's one of my favorite ones:

I live close to Dayton, Ohio. I am a 32 single white male. I am a smoker. I weigh in at 170 and stand at 5′-11″ Dayton has a lot of liberal women which I am tired of dating. Help me find a republican woman. Below is what kind of describes myself in a nutshell .... Some find me hot, some not. You decide. I have good morals and values and I am of a conservative nature. ...I have all my teeth and brush them... Someone who isn't a control freak. Good personal hygiene and has all their teeth and no rotten black teeth. I see this way too much and I find it a turn off...
