Target Boycott Hypocrisy

Sun Dec 05, 2004 at 03:57:47 PM PDT

I just saw a "news" story about this on ABC and the facts are so far from the truth on this that I had to write my first diary.

The American Family Association is urging "christians" to boycott Target.  The reason - Target is enforcing its no solicitation policy which means that the Salvation Army will not be allowed to solicit outside of Target Stores.  What you don't hear about this story in the extended entry...

My understanding is that Target made this decision and notified the Salvation Army about this in spring.  They even offered to write a check for the amount that the Salvation Army might get from buckets outside Target stores.  All the Salvation Army had to do was ask.  To this date, no correspondence from the Salvation Army.

Unfortunately this is just gossip around town since Target isn't officially saying anything publicly (or at least wouldn't talk to ABC according to the story).

What kills me about all this is that, if true, the Salvation Army could contact the AFA and ask that the boycott be called off, but apparently they haven't (or the AFA is doing it regardless).  That this is news given the facts behind the situation is also upsetting me.  Target is a public corportation (a non-governmental entity) and has every right to do this.

Where does the AFA stand on the NBC and CBS refusal to air a church promotion ad?

Personally, I'm all for what the Salvation Army does but I don't like it when certain charities get special privledges over others (kind of like the United Way).
